A Novel Approach to Friction Drilling Process: Experimental and Numerical Study on Friction Drill Joining of Dissimilar Materials AISI304/AL6061

Joining dissimilar materials is always a challenging and interesting topic for researchers industries. Friction drill joining, as solid-state process, novel approach to connecting similar materials. Dissimilar metals, especially ultra-high-strength steels aluminum alloys, are used significantly the mass reduction of automotive bodies, reduce CO2 emissions in industry. In current work, friction joining technique AISI304 Al6061 was experimentally numerically studied. A improving joint strength, load-clamping modification, tool movement also introduced. The required thrust force measured, it proven that adding sheet layers does not affect force. To understand identify mechanism its material behaviour, stirring formation region were analyzed. thermo-mechanical finite element model developed, thermal stress, plastic strain, temperature numerical comparison between joints formed under normal improvement conditions conducted, significant effect on strength formed-bush quality found. Based findings, great potential using confirmed.
